The lamp you describe sounds like an ignition warning lamp, which has a
resistance wire wrapped around it and as a consequence is fitted with a 2.5V
bulb.

I'm not really familiar with the TD, but on the TC the fuel warning lamp is
not like this. It's about the same size, but has a flat lens in front of a
screen with the word FUEL cut through it, no resistance wire and a 12V bulb.
For a while in the 70s or so the parts suppliers sent out ignition warning
lamps with green lenses instead of the fuel warning light as described.

However yours will still work fine without the resistor if you fit a 12V
bulb (similar to those in the instrument lamps behind the dash).
