Andy, What camshaft is in your engine? Engines to ~24000 had cams that wanted .019 clearance. Engines after that were set at .012. The Crane cam that is available today is (I believe) .014 intake and .016 exhaust (check that before setting) Setting the valves clearances too tight causes the valves to be in contact with the seats for less time, hence there is less cooling of the valves.
