Bob,
I never had much success with lifting the pistons to determine the
correct mixture, just never acquired the skill I guess. I went to using
the color tune and have never had a problem with getting the correct
mixure (another good method is to use a vacuum gauge and adjust for
maximum vacuum). I am not sure that lowering the jet alone, as you
suggest, would give the same indications as lifting the piston. Lifting
the piston not only allows the engine to pull in more fuel, it also
decreases the velocity of air across the venturi due to a slightly wider
opening and therefore decreases the vacuum developed across the jet. My
question is, since lifting the piston causes two opposit effects (makes
more fuel available by using a narrower portion of the needle and
decreases the amount of fuel being drawn into the carburetor by
increasing the width of the venturi), how much lowering of the jet would
cause the same effect if any? I suppose that this would make for an
interesting experiment.

Cheers,
Dave
