Ball, Tie Rod End Moss Part # 261-260
I installed 3 of these (purchased through LBCarCo) as part of an overall
steering rebuild. After installation, a 20 mile test run was performed. On
Thursday 6/7/01 my wife and I departed in the TC for the GOF @ Reading PA.
After approximately 30 miles of driving most of it on I90, we exited the MA
turnpike and stopped for the toll booth. When I started to move slowly up
to the Toll Booth, the car developed an extreme shimmy in the front end. As
I looked out of the car to the front, I could see the right front wheel
moving back and forth several inches. This was due to the fact that the Tie
Rod had become detached from the steering arm. This because the threaded
portion of the Tie Rod End Ball had broken off at the base of the major
diameter of the part which fits in the steering arm.
We had the car ferried home on a flatbed and I drove to and obtained
replacement parts from Abingdon Spares. When I applied a wrench to the
retaining nut on the Ball on the Left hand Tie Rod, the threaded portion of
that one broke off as well. The third one on the drag link end came off
normally.
A visual comparison of the parts supplied by Moss and Abingdon revealed the
following:
1. The Moss Part appears to have been heat treated in it's entirety whereas
the Abingdon part appears to have only the Ball so treated.
2. The Moss Part has the threaded portion of the part both undercut to the
minor diameter of the thread at the base of the major diameter as well as
being square cut. The Abingdon supplied part is radiused to the major
diameter of the thread in this area (where the Moss Part failed).
