Both previous answers overlooked your comment on the TC's handling, Scott.
If the TC you drove wandered all over the road, likely it had little to do
with the fact that the tires had inner tubes in them. How do you think TCs
were such successful race-cars in their day? They surely used tubes back
then, too.

The problem with the TC was more likely a worn steering box, worn tie rod
and drag link ends, worn spring shackle pins and bushings, worn king pins,
worn wheel bearings, bent front axle or incorrect alignment. When all these
aspects of the front end of a TC are in first-rate condition and it has good
tires mounted on straight wheels which have been balanced correctly, a TC
can be driven spiritedly in perfect safety and with remarkable accuracy.
