Steering Rack Play

Can play be adjusted on the steering rack?  I saw the "adjusting nut" on top
of the rack but I don't understand what this does.

I don't have enough play to effect the on the road steering.  I can feel and
hear play if I jack up one wheel and move it back and forth.  The tie rod
ends are new and have no play.  The noise and movement is coming from the
rack or the joints on the end of the rack.

Any advice would be appreciated.
