I think Ed just hit on the rub here, or rather backed into it. Remeber
watching a paint detail in the US Army mix up some paint in the field to
re-paint the areas of the choppers that had been burned off by the engine's
exhaust. The paint came as a paste, and they thinned it with AvGas. No two
came out the same, though the FS paint chips said they should, and they were
using the same recipe as printed on the can.
I suspect that back in the day they couldn't measure paint and dye mixtures
as precisely as we can today, so every batch could be off a bit.
I also suspect that if you have a sample of the original paint you can take
it to the right paint shop and they can do a mass spectroscophy, (sp?) on it
and come up with the exact mixture, (I know some interior paint shops that
do it, but haven't heard of any auto ones, but maybe they're out there).
My 2p.
