Hi Bill, Yes the number should be the same on the firewall plate. ( we call
it the bulkhead here in the UK ). My TD was returned to the UK from the
SanFrancisco area and the plate reads much like yours should. The large
plate on the bulkhead reads :-
Car No.TD/8254
EXL/NA
Engine No. XPAG/TD/LHX 7239.
The EXL/NA means that it was a North American export car with left hand
drive.
TD engines on L/h drive cars also had the letters LHX following the engine
no. This LHX code was dropped early 1952.
Apart from originality I think there are no disadvantages, and such blocks
are relatively less expensive than originals.
I am no expert on the finer points of differences between the MG & Wolsley
block but I do know that the dipstick is on the opposite side to the TD. My
TD also has the words MG cast into the block with an octagonal frame around
it, this can be found on the other side of the engine from the octagonal
brass plate. I seem to recall that Wolsley blocks had a 'W' cast in this
position on the L/h side Framed with an shape not unlike this' <> '.as did I
think later blocks as does my 54TF. There are surely experts out there who
know more .
My Cyl Head has the no 22952 cast into it just above the no1 exhaust
manifold .
If it does prove to be a non standard block it will be a negotiating
advantage!.

PS Whilst looking for something else I have come across a paragraph in the
Brown & Gammons TD/TF parts catalogue entitled Engine Blocks & their
Identification. I will scan it and send it later but it seems there many be
other issues like different bore sizes.
