MG has a long-standing tradition of offering many choices as to paint &
trim colors. A friend showed me a "salesman's list of options" which was NOT
available to the public--only dealers. As I recall, it covered TCs (but
could also have been TA or TB. At any rate, it was one of those three.).
It was an EXTENSIVE list, including a choice of several different radios
(!), metallic (!) paints, two-color paint schemes (!), luggage racks, dual
spare wheel carriers, axle ratios, wheel & tire sizes, etc., etc. However,
there apparently was no wish to reveal all these choices to the average
customer! If he'd buy a "stock" car (regardless of color, trim, etc.) that
was GREAT, and simplified life for everyone.
I suspect the options list was revealed only a bit at a time to pry a
sale out of someone who wasn't willing to settle for the ordinary! At the
time, sales were vitally important, and the best kind was for a car that was
already in stock, but if that wouldn't do, then the salesman was to reveal
the enticing options bit by bit until the customer BOUGHT!
Since none of the T-types had any sort of code re. paint/trim, I suspect
that almost ANYTHING could have come out of the factory, and be legitimately
called "original".
One of these days, I'll get my friend to send me a copy of the list, and
I'll share it with the rest of you.
Regards,
Carl Fritz
