I'm sure others will chime in with starting techniques, so I'll save that
advice unless you tell me you need it.

As for the brakes, re-lining them yourself is a chancy business. We sell
re-lined shoes for T-series cars in sets of four shoes (one axle set) for
just $36 exchange. Not much more than the MGB ones, and at least you know
you'll have a safe and professional job done. Let me know if you are
interested.
