I don't know too much about the process, but I'll tell what I do know:
1) The T type head is made from cast iron, which makes is difficult to weld.
I believe it can be welded by a specialist using a nickel based welding rod.
2) There are specialists who claim to be able to repair blocks and heads. I
believe they call the process "metal stitching". There were a number of such
outfits I used to see in England when we were there in the 80's.
3) A successful repair will depend upon the location and extent of the
damage.
4) I believe the late head can be used on the early engine, but not
vice-versa. Don't quote me on that one, however. Be aware, of course, that
the different heads use different spark plugs.
5) I'm sure there are spare heads around, I would advertise on the Internet
(MG Enthusiasts Club home page, perhaps?). Also, try Gerry Goguen at
Abingdon Spares. He's only in New Hampshire - not THAT far.
Good luck.

Lew Palmer

Subject: XPAG head
A friend of mine just dropped a valve in his TD. He says that it poked a
hole in the head into the water jacket and the machine shop he took it
to said it is not repairable. I have several questions:
1) Does anyone know anything about repairing something like this?
2) If indeed it is not repairable, do all of the heads(early or late;
banana or round holes) work with all blocks if you use the correct
gasket?
3) Does anyone have a spare head that they would like to sell,
preferably not too far from the York, PA area where he is? And of course
how much would such a head cost?
Thanks,
Charlie Baldwin
