Listers,
I would appreciate advice on this problem. Here's what happened:
We started out in the TD yesterday for a 65 mile drive. About five
miles down the road, I-95 in CT, the ammeter suddenly jumped from the 1-2
normal range to 15 and things smelled hot. (On this road, odd smells may
or may not be one's own car) Pulled off at first exit. Generator was
normal temperature and regulator felt normal under-hood temp. No smell of
burning wires and they were not hot. Removed regulator cover, no smoke
came out, and I wiggled each of the points-the two penny-size flipper
units on top, and the smaller ignition-point size unit on the left
(outboard) side of the regulator. Deciding to be cautious, as the return
trip would be after dark, I returned the car to the garage and swapped
for the GT. En route home the ammeter was perfect, steady, right where it
belongs.
Are there owner-service tips for the regulator? Is this caused by
sticking points that can be cleaned by the owner? Are there more points
than the three I found? Should the unit be removed and taken to a pro?.
By the way, we missed seeing all of you on the road---every other
licenced driver in the USA was out there yesterday, and all on the same
piece of pavement. Time for 60 miles in the GT? 125 minutes....
Although we were overheating, the GT's temp needle never moved out of the
width of the N.
TIA
Bob
