Guys,
I am totally convinced that a bunch of our engines were green while
perhaps just as many were red. The engine in my J2 is most certainly green
and is an incredibly unmolested example of a swept wing car.
My L2 #002 was in less terrific condition but once the engine and
gearbox were out and dismantled, it was more than obvious that all of the
gearbox which was below floorboard level was still in the original red. This
included the main alloy gearbox case. The shade of red is an exact match to
MMM Carmine red which also happens to be virtually the same as the dark shade
of T-series red usually referred to as Autumn Red. Not only that but it's
also virtually the same as T-series engine paint.
I've mixed and matched numerous paint and component samples that I
have here and regardless of the light it's all the same shade of dark red. By
the way, primer was not used under the original engine paint.
Cheers,
Chris Nowlan
