Jon,
When I bought a new set of brake cables and tried fitting them I had all
kinds of problems. My major concern was that they were too short on the
front.
The method of rectification was to peel the outer covering back from the
front side of the fixing bracket ( 4 hole unit passing through chassis.) This
gave less of a loop in the outer cable to the backplate and in turn
lengthened the inner cable. This would, as I see it, solve Terry's problem.
In your case, could you lengthen the outer cable by inserting a split casing
or tube?
Or, you could think along the lines of Nuvolari who was quoted as saying
"Brakes? They only slow you down!"
How many miles have you done on the cables?
The big question of course is did you assemble them correctly around the
brake cross shaft? As I recall it reaches either way. ?? Just a thought.
As for setting them, I found it best all four wheels jacked up. Three
ratchets on the brake cross shaft. Adjust each wheel to approximately equal
drag. Then release brake handle and test for no drag. Test on gravel / cinder
road for tire marks on braking and straight stopping. Using this method I
didn't adjust the PA brakes except for one or two twist of the inner adjuster
in 10,000 miles. Period.
Now the engine, oh the bloody engine!!!!
Good luck.
Brian Kelly.
