My rebuilt speedometer seems to read exactly half
what it should e.g. at about 40 mph it reads 20
mph. I wonder if it might be because I have a PA
gearbox instead of a J2 one. The box has 4768 and
under that 187383D stamped on the nearside. The
speedo ratio on the back of the box is 8 14.
Is this a J box? When I first got it I had to swop
the first motion shaft which was a P type for a J
type. Could it be a J casing with PA ratios? First
gear seems very low but I haven't driven a PA, or
for that matter many other Js to compare it with.
Is there an easy way of checking the ratios with
the box in situ. I don't have a starter dog and so
can't turn the engine over very easily or in a
controlled way. Or is it simply that the speedo
needs a different govenor weight. Any advice would
be appreciated.
