When our J2 tank demonstrated massive leaks after 6 months dry while we were
rebuilding the engine, the back was replaced with a sheet of 1/32 mild
steel. It's not a particularly difficult job, but you do need to be able to
solder sheet metal. No-one bothered with niceties like stiffening ribs back
then, so they were left out. It's still OK 30-something years later so I
guess they weren't important!
Talk to your local radiator shop - they would have the skill if you can get
them interested.
