It's certainly true of J2s.
All the J2 bonnets I've seen (only about 6!) are stamped with the
chassis number and color of the car.
My theory is that the unpainted bonnet was trimmed to fit the specific
car - coachbuilt cars vary don't forget - then removed for painting. The
bonnet was stamped with number and color so that it could be reunited
with the correct car after they had both been painted.
They didn't really use a paint 'code" - just GR for green, WH for white,
and so on.
Probably if a car has had a new bonnet (accident damage, say) the
number's not replicated.
