well kt , if ya dont have a taper attachment then you have to set the
tailstock over and mount the part between centers , you can make a center to
go in the chuck from a scrap of round stock and you can make that with the
compuond slide set at 30 degrees which will give you a taper of 60 degrees
included . the compound slide is only good for short tapers ( the length of
the compound slide travel max ) . setting over the tailstock is the method
machinists use if they dont have a taper attachment but then you have to
re-center it to cut a straight part and that can be tedious untill you get
proficient at it .
i recommend you go to the library and see if they have a basic machinist
book or go online and purchase one as it has much good info for a newbie .
