Jon-- This was a response to Keith Turk's comment about putting heat into
his Rodeck race engine to get ready for a run. You try to warm up these big
aluminum engines on straight methanol especially on a cold autumn morning --
it's almost impossible because the combustion temperature is so low without
any appreciable load on the engine and the cooling effect of the vaporizing
alcohol. More than once we've had to run the ardun against the rear brakes
to get it to warm up. And Doug has electric crankcase heaters to warm the
oil. That helps a little but it requires looking after the portable
generator. Kind of a nuisance if you have to start it too early in the
morning. A propane hot water heater is designed to run quietly and
unattended. Heck, you could even set it up to start off of a 24 hour clock
timer or a cell phone call (Like the Iraqi car bombs) I have one of these
(a timer, not a car bomb) with it's own internal 9v battery backup. I set it
up on my electric hot water heater at home. Needed to have the battery
backup because pacific graft & extortion isn't real consistent where I live.
