Wes, at 1 degree ATDC the rod is in almost perfect alignment with the crank
pin. Any pressure (force) at that point is almost totally wasted because it
will not impart a turning moment. Your most efficient geometry is when the
rod is normal (at 90 degrees) to the crank journal. At that instant 100% of
the force is producing a turning (torque) moment. Firing the laser would
have to be quite a bit ATDC. Most likely determined by the remainder of the
50% burn as you appropriately indicated. -Elon
