If i had to take just one guess as to what is different between now and the
'good old days' is that now there is plenty of good parts that you can buy
pretty much ready to use. Then you had to make everything because there was
nothing to buy.. But i am willing to bet plenty of people hired shops to
make them parts they could not build themselves. Racing has always been
about the deepest pockets anyway why is that such a revelation to some? Some
probably remember when they could build a nice car for under a grand... but
what was the price of gasoline then and what did you earn a week. I am ony
53 and remember gasoline well under a buck and minimum wage was like 1.50 or
so an hour. Well everything has gone up at least 600% so get over it. The
price of raw materials even more than that now that the third world
countries buy every bit they can find. i am willing to bet the high price
for a lot of parts goes into the material they are made out of not an
astounding X10 cost to make them. Most things now are made in minutes not
days running a bridgeport or lathe.. So the deep pockets will always win in
the end if they chose to.. i think the smart money builds one good engine
and one good car right off the bat rather than building 20 crappy engines
that blow up over a 20 year period same goes for the car. It has always been
pay me now or pay me later in any racing venue.
