Gary, I've owned a compressed natural gas powered vehicle for street
use, but nothing for racing. I've got about 98% good things to say
about the CNG, though -- sure wish I could still run it, but the two
CNG compressor/filling stations up here have closed down (lack of
interest, which in itself is interesting 'cause I got my vehicle out of
the local gas company fleet -- which was 100% CNG for a while, but even
they quit -- too hard to keep service mechanics trained!) and I didn't
choose to get a compressor for here at the office.
But other than supply concerns and a minor hassle with low-temperature
starting (it had a toggle switch for gasoline/gaseous fuel, so I'd
start with petrol and switch to vapor after a few minutes) it was a
fine fuel...best of all it was not laden with highway use taxes so cost
me an equivalent of 80 cents/gallon -- at a time when gasoline was at
least 50% more.
It used a collar on top of the throttle-body injectors to meter in the
natural gas, and ... and ... I could go on. It was dandy as fuel, 120
octane equiv. too. Get in touch if you'd like to hear more stories and
comments.
