Alabama Changes the Value of Pi
The April 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason
newsletter contained an article claiming that the Alabama state
legislature has voted to change the value of the mathematical constant
pi from 3.14159 to the 'Biblical value' of 3.0. This was done to make
it easier for Alabamans (Alabamians?) to determine race-car speeds when
working with various gear ratios and tire diameters.
I just found this while doing a Google search for my grandson's
homework project. How will I ever explain to him what those folks
"down south" are doing?
