Hi Matt in Steeltown ( well, it USED TO BE !!! ) ..... Welcome to our
land speed list ..... there is a real wealth of knowledge and experience
here from the combined membership involved on this list..... I am even
further away from the Salt then you ..... here in Connecticut, and my
sons and I have all made five or more treks to Speedweek, first running
a car in competition there in August of 2000. Please let us know a little
more about what type of car you hope to build and what speed range you
intend to compete in ..... Unfortunately, even at Bonneville, the last
bastion
for the backyard builder and the resourceful mechanic, to be sure ...... it
does take a fair amount of money if you want to go really fast in a very well
built car, but the vast array of classes affords a chance for many to race
that are on a limited, but still reasonable, budget. This is NOT NASCAR
and NOT NHRA, and let's all hope that the creeping commercialism that
overtook those two once-fun venues over a few decades, and turned them
into BIG BUSINESSES, doesn't ever squelch the racing for the many clever
and devoted builders and racers that "run what ya brung " on the Salt and
at the Lakes, and down there on the Maxton concrete runway, and have
MORE FUN, and MORE SPEED for their BUCK, than any other type
of racing I have seen or been in or around for well over fifty years now .
Many of us fortunate enough to have spent time there consider
Bonneville to be an extremely beautiful place to visit here on this earth
..... even if the racecars were not there ! Sunrises and sunsets, and even
rainstorms way off in the distance, can be truly quite awesome out there !
You will see this for yourself on your first visit there ......and realize
what
a unique treasure this place is for all landspeed racers, and for all
Americans, and our visitors, who love the varied and wonderful scenery
our great country offers to us all .....
........ Good Luck to you in all your future racing efforts !
