Wes,
That's great information and thank you for the kind words.
You give a good example of how things can go wrong if the engine
builder doesn't know or understand the application. Using a rebuilt
car motor in a boat running in 38 degree Lake Tahoe water can
eat pistons.
Tony,
I've started using Mobil 1 back in the '80s. I use 5W-30 in both the 1999
Ranger 4 banger and the '01 Odyssey soccer-mom-mobile.
I start the vehicle, go 600 feet to county highway E-16 then turn left
and try
to accelerate up a 5% grade to 40 mph ASAP because of a blind corner
towards my right. It's two lane with little or no shoulder. I cringe a
bit every
time I do it but the tests from Blackstone Labs say everything is just
wonderful. I'm going to move to 0W-30 as you have.
Keith,
I find my self in the same boat. My brain says use 0W-30 but my gut
says 20W-50 is the only way. My first car, a '42 Canadian Chevy,
had poured babbitt bearings with splash lubed rods. It had to have
nice thick oil - or else!!! Ring wear wasn't good but the cast iron
pistons never wore out.
Thanks a bunch everyone,
Bryan
