SBC water pump - pwr steering pump question

Can  the water pump be spun in either direction or are there 
differences?  Serpentine drive turns the water pump opposite the crank. 
Turning it the other way would solve one problem, would need to get 
another pump otherwise.
Same question for the power steering pump. This is one of the newer 
small pumps (type II - III) with separate reservoir, typically found on 
a Corvette.
