oops, sorry, writing mistake - the accident was 65 years ago.....
Yeap, Rosemeyer was killed when he tried to get his record back. Caracciola
runs in the morning 268,7 mph with a peak over 270 on the 28th January 1938.
Rosemeyer's car was modified to the 1937 car - the first over 250 mph / 400 kmh
on a public road. The car was modified to a ground effect car - may be the
first ever which was used.
In the third run he was by around 275 mph, the car crashed - some people means
by a cross wind, but the marks on the accident area says other. Own
investigations with a help from some computer programmer shows, that there is
the possibility that the car body implode by the extreme underpressure under
the car - the body was build out of very thin aluminium fixed with some screws
on a frame. Anyway, we will never know what's really happend and the Third
Reich publicity didn't allowed to this time to say the true - important was
that a German Sports Hero passed away when he tried to regain his title as
fastest driver......
