I'll hereby claim the World's Record for public highway speed on Route 250
between Green Bank, WV and Staunton, VA : 60 minutes flat.
Hah! --- even without a GPS !

As most countries of the western world do not allow their public highways
to be closed any longer for any form of high speed driving the "World"
highway speed record or "World" Urban road speed record seems to me just
another US National effort (LOL). Some of the South African records and
the Swedish records are still set on roads, street 'furniture' and all at
their sides.
If only we had your freedoms!

ps wait until there are accepted GPS units giving speeds for vehicles - we
will all be able to claim something in the way of a record, regardless of
accuracy or duration - and that man 'in the best seat in the house' will be
redundant!
