Years ago I was in a German glider club and our sailplanes had the piece of
yarn you mentioned mounted on the nose just in front of the canopy. It
worked just fine but an electronic sensor could easily detect a yaw of 1
degree or less.

Neil, one of the most senstive instruments one can have on an airplane is a
yaw string made from yarn taped to the windscreen
