I have a shirt box (normally holds two shirts) full of the desiccant packs
that come in shoes, silk shirts and other clothing when it is shipped from
the Orient or from South America. I usually just give it to friends so ask
me! Normally it is tossed but I have trained the my co-workers at Jos. A.
Bank to hang on to them for me. Polo also uses a lot of those in their
knits. Ask at an outlet store near you. They're small but will stop
rust/mildew problems. Best thing is to put them in the oven for 1/2 hour at
the lowest setting before putting them in where you want moisture absorbed
by the silica dioxide. My friend spends much of the year in Samoa. He
carries a large Zip-lock bag for his leather shoes and uses several of these
to prevent mildew. It works for him. Certainly better than cosmoline.
