Our old M8C McLaren Can-Am car used a timing retard rev limiter on its Chevy
ZL-1 engine. When the rev limit was reached, the timing was retarded enough
to suddenly lose about 200BHP. It didn't overstress the engine and it worked
very well.

You don't need to hook to wheel speeds. An accelerometer and a slew rate rev
limiter will do the job just fine.. Or rather than rev limit you pull timing
out as well. The ones you can hear use rev limiting a little crude as it can
upset the chassis unlike the ones that pull timing out.. Dave
