Doug;
I guess I haven't been doing as much heavy-duty grinding as you have or else
the old ones were a bit more rugged.
BTW, the one thing that almost always fails on my electric tools is the
darned speed control! Manufacturers use the lowest power SCRs that they can
get away with and eventually they fail. It's crazy; for a dime more-- at the
most-- they could put in a bigger SCR that would be able to handle the
stalled-motor current and live forever. I also use that speed control box
for some hand drills that fried their internal speed controls.

IN MY EXPERIENCE,...
IF YOU RUN THEM A LOT, OR ARE USING THEM LIKE THEY OUGHTTA BE USED.... THE
STOP PIN FOR CHANGING CUTTERS WILL BREAK, AND THE DRIVE SHAFT BUSHINGS WILL
WOGGLE OUT.
THE GOOD NEWS IS; -IF- YOU ASK FOR, AND PAY THE EXTRA 10% EXTRA FOR, A
-FULL- (2 YEAR?) ELECTRIC TOOL GUARANTEE, -WHEN- IT GOES ON THE FRITZ,
YOU TAKE IT BACK TO SEARS, AND BRING YOUR -NEW- ONE HOME ! KEEP THAT
RECIEPT!!!
I'M ON MY 3rd ONE AND SHE'S MAKIN' NOISES (UGH THE GUARANTEE HAS RUN OUT
!!!)
GREAT IDEA ON THE SPEED CONTROL NEIL!
THANKS I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT,.. AND I HAVE A SPEED CONTROL IVE BEEN
SAVIN FOR YEARS, WELL, DUH. :-)

Dana;
I've been using a Craftsman electric die grinder for the last 25 years and I
like it a lot. It has a 1/4 horsepower permanent-magnet motor but no speed
control. I built a box with a good SCR speed control that I plug the die
grinder into when I want to control its speed. I'm sure their newer models
probably have a speed control built-in, so take a trip to Sears and check
out a Craftsman. On sale, they're not badly priced.
