The Fuel Modified Sports class was instituted in 2002. Yet I see that a
car that ran in 1998 set a record in 1998 using a B motor and that has some
how translated to a D sized record in 2003 record listings. Are records
retroactive?

Records as a whole are not retroactive. In the case of Fuel Modified Sports
when the two class jump for NOS was discontinued it was decided to have the
fuel records reflect those that were set using NOS. This means that a D motor
using NOS would have had the old record listed in the B class.
The example cited however is an error in the 2003 rulebook. The correct
records are listed at www.scta-bni.org. The corrected records read
B/FMS=251.261, D/FMS= open, B/GMS=246.361, D/GMS=222.965. The rulebook
incorrectly lists the B/GMS record as D/FMS. Research showed a cert card
written for a 410 ci engine instead of the 302 ci engine w/NOS as originally
thought of as run.
Open for D/FMS means that two consecutive runs will be a record speed. If your
average holds up at the end of the week as the fastest in the class that will
be the BNI record. The Bonneville 200 MPH Club has set a class minimum of 240.

The above procedure was also used when setting class standards for the Classic
Category. That is, to bring across existing records to match the new classes.
