I think what you're seeing are intentional- dimples made with a center
punch. These were probably made to generate a bit of turbulence within the
squish area of the combustion chamber. I don't think they should be all the
way out to the edge of the piston, though.

Boy you guys have got me rolling.... thanks for all the good answers It
looks to me like a small BB but have no idea how it got in there I remember
one morning I fired the engine and it was running on three cylinders I
revved it up and it started firing on all four again. The funny thing I ran
that engine many more times that year at El Mirage , World Finals and on the
dyno and it still made the same power. Go figure I try to smooth all the
sharp edges out of the chamber in hopes of preventing detonation.
