You mention subject cam is a solid lifter type so I
will assume it is a cast iron unit. One of the primary
defects left after grinding is identified as white
layer. White layer is a very unstable/destructive
surface and should be removed prior to use.
Historically, Parko Lubrite (or other oxide coatings
of this type) has been used to hold lubrication during
break-in. Since a lifter exerts high point contact
pressure on a camshaft lobe, any surface defect is
capable of causing problems (some small, some
catastrophic). The fix is to remove white layer via
any number of superfinishing techniques. The most
expensive is abrasive coated mylar tape commonly used
in OEM production of new cams. The other requires a
simple abrasive-filled nylon filament (preferably
silicon carbide) radial wheel. This wheel will abrade
away any white layer present and render the lobes free
of surface defects. Once surface defects are
eliminated, the cam lobes can be coated with any
hand-applied lube specifically designed for that use.
Assuming there were no other issues with improper
taper ground into the lobes and lifter face, removal
of white layer will go a long way to saving a new or
reground cam.
