It goes back to the question of how many layers of recognition do you want
or need. That's a very personal thing. For the bulk of the salt racers I
think I can safely say they agree with Dahlgren. The others pay their money
and go for it at accredited meets. People like Costella have their own
acceptance of the effect it has on other racers at those meets.

How many reading this have the slightest idea what those FIA classifications
mean? Obviously a small fraction of the racers. Howard and Fred set their
records ten plus years ago. About the same time that Al did. Where is the
recognition for others who set FIA records on the salt within the last ten
years? Louise has dug up the records and acquired the certificates and is
distributing them ... and more than any words, that proves my point. If the
FIA were a factor there would have been more certification attempts in the
in-between, twenty years plus.
If Louise didn't have a financial interest in the Vesco attempt would she be
working this hard for all the racers? How long would it take for the FIA or
the obviously ineffective ACCUS to do what she has done?
The fact that the FIA treats racers who we respect and admire as an
afterthought tells me how much they care about them.
I know that back in the sixties, when Wes Knudsen set an FIA record for
boats, it took almost two years for him to get the certificate. I was on
the pit crew and didn't hear about the certification for another six months
as I had moved to Los Angeles. I had almost forgotten that he had made the
attempt. So many other things had transpired in the interim. Other than
having the certificate posted on the kitchen wall I never heard another
comment about it until his funeral two years ago.
As Keith has said, we flogged this dead horse several times in the past with
no resolution. I'm guessing that until there is some attempt from the FIA
to get more involved in land-speed (and acceptance of those overtures by
land-speed) the salt racers concern for FIA will remain at the same low
level.
