Jim we used these for years at the steam plants. mostly for preheat work
prior the the electronic ones. They were also great for heating up ball
bearings on both magnetic and inductive heaters. We had many different
temperature sticks. I did what you want to do at El mirage by putting
different heat stick marks next to one another and then looked at then after
a run. I put the mark right from the flange to out 2". The 1200 degree
worked the best on No's 1 and 6 for a Jimmy. All the rest shared 2 into 1
ports so the readings were always higher and consequently melted the over
1300 stick. so I tuned to the 1200 on the 2 that worked. This a real cheap
way to get some info. When I had what looked like a rich condition on the
plugs sure enough the stick wasn't melted. So I quit doing it and learned
to read all parts of a plug instead.....But any info that's good couldn't
hurt especially starting rich and stepping lean.
