I think it was Smokey Yunick who told the story on himself that when he
first got involved in NASCAR, he wanted to be a driver. But he found
out very shortly that there was something wrong with his right foot. It
wouldn't hold the gas pedal down all the way on the straights at speed.
It kept raising up. He tried holding his right foot down with his left,
but it still lifted up. So finally, he gave up on that part and turned
his attention to the technical side of the sport, where he made a legend
