Bill; It would make you weep to see the old photos of P-40s stacked up on their nose like dominoes, waiting to be scrapped in Kingman, AZ after WW II. The same thing happened to other planes here in Tucson and at other airfields in CA. Very few survived-- but farmers in southern AZ bought Allisons for $50 to $100 to run their irrigation pumps!
