ABC NIGHTLINE Monday, January 6, 2003
But the bulk of tonight's broadcast will be devoted to the bunker. During
Desert Storm, the U.S. fired three cruise missiles at the site of Saddam's
bunker, destroying the building that sat on top of it, but not harming the
bunker itself. They even tried to develop special bombs just to try to
penetrate the thick concrete that protects the bunker itself. It turns out
that many years ago a young Saddam visited Marshall Tito in Yugoslavia.
Tito showed Saddam his bunker, and Saddam, clearly impressed by what he
saw, wanted one of his own. He hired the same Yugoslav engineers to build
one just like it in Baghdad. Nightline correspondent Dave Marash got a
rare tour of Tito's bunker, and interviewed one of the engineers, his face
hidden to protect his identity, who built the bunker for Saddam.
Bottom line? The Yugoslavs did a good job. They think that nothing short
of a small nuclear weapon could actually damage or destroy the bunker they
built.
