OK, while we're on the Studebaker thread, here's a nice El Mirage story.
Next time you're out on the El Mirage lake bed, stop by and visit the Red
Studebaker of "Studebaker Joe" AKA "Stud Joe".
Ask them about the time in the early 90's a newbie wannabee was standing
there drooling under his hood while the car was being warmed up.
Ask them about how this engine admirer was marveling at the immaculately
clean motor and the lovely sound it was making as the pit crew member (one
of his sons) blipped the pedal.
Then ask them about the oil line that let go spewing very warm (but not hot
yet thankfully) oil all over the engine compartment ... all over the top
half of this race fan's face, hair and clothes, (who by now had half his
body under the hood), and into the very mouth of the race fan.
I still remember the taste! Yuck!
I still wear the same white (now oily tan splotched) cowboy hat as tribute.
