This race is a real kick! Occasionally drivers that have run
that race enter the Silver State Classic in Nevada. Some of
the stories I have heard are a real crack-up (no pun
intended). I stumbled across an old Carrera car deep in the
bowells of Mendenhall's "museum" but I can't remember who
drove it....

> AND THE RACE IS ON IN MEXICO
>
>Some 100 specially modified cars are participating in a cross-
>Mexico auto race that began over the weekend in Chiapas. It's
>the annual La Carrera Panamericana race. Most of the cars are
>classics. Some were made in the 1950s and '60s. The cars are
>divided into classes. For example, drivers entering BMWs will
>race them in a division with Alfa Romeos, Mercurys and Hudson
>Hornets. Promoters tell media that the race was first run in
>the 1950s, but was later discontinued. It was revived in the
>late 1980s. Some of the worst driving must be done in the
>initial days of the race, when the course traverses several
>tricky mountain roads and desolate areas. The 2,000-mile con-
>test is scheduled to end on Halloween in Nuevo Laredo, across
>the border from Laredo, Texas.
