AND THE RACE IS ON IN MEXICO
Some 100 specially modified cars are participating in a cross-
Mexico auto race that began over the weekend in Chiapas. It's
the annual La Carrera Panamericana race. Most of the cars are
classics. Some were made in the 1950s and '60s. The cars are
divided into classes. For example, drivers entering BMWs will
race them in a division with Alfa Romeos, Mercurys and Hudson
Hornets. Promoters tell media that the race was first run in
the 1950s, but was later discontinued. It was revived in the
late 1980s. Some of the worst driving must be done in the
initial days of the race, when the course traverses several
tricky mountain roads and desolate areas. The 2,000-mile con-
test is scheduled to end on Halloween in Nuevo Laredo, across
the border from Laredo, Texas.
