Ain't that a fact - - and then into a dream come true! After fifty years of
me dreaming about Bonneville, my wife just upped and said: "Do it!" At that
point I couldn't even find Bonneville on the map. Seriously, I spent two or
three days just locating Wendover and the flats on a map. I then found a few
bits and pieces on the internet, wrote to a guy in Washington State who had
been written up in some magazine, and he sent me an address for USFRA. Within
a year, I had discovered ECTA and SCTA, and had tried my first run at Maxton.
I've now been through two cars, claimed a couple of records at Maxton, and am
in the process of building my third car. Without this list, I don't think it
would have ever gotten much past a single visit to Maxton.
You've heard the thing about one man's bad luck is another man's fortune,
well, for five years now I'd set WOS 2002 as my target first trip to the salt.
Unfortunately, a couple of serious personal setbacks forced me to move my
dream to WOS 2003. My plan includes leaving Texas three weeks early, visiting
Vancouver Island and Alaska, then racing at Bonneville on my return route
south. My entire dream would have gone down the tube had I been on my way
back from Alaska, with all my money spent, only to learn that WOS had been
cancelled. My perceived "setbacks" have, in fact, served to save me a great
dissappointment and will allow me to rework my plan for next year. I will plan
on racing first, vacationing after.
For a couple of years now I've been bragging on how I just want to have fun, I
wouldn't be chasing any records. Well, I have taken kind of a turn on that a
little bit. Kinda what might be called a "mayf philosoply". You see, Mayf
just wants to break the record set umpteen years ago by a Sunbeam, with a
Sunbeam. Well, I'm now building a 1955 Chrysler C-300 - the car that has
always been my dream. My goal is to exceed the record that it set in 1955 as
the worlds fastest production sedan. A VERY DOABLE thing. 127.580 MPH was all
it took in 1955. It won't be a record for the current class, but it will
satisfy my dream.
I wonder just how many dreams this list has helped come true.
