Chris, that's absolutely right, the closed end of the spring clip must always lead, and that's exactly how I assembled it. Someone speculated that particular spring clip might have been "Bad" and it's true, that anything is possible. Any metal used by Man may have an unknown flaw in it, on a billion to one basis.
