Let me try to make sense of this so everyone understands. First, salt
conditions dictates course lengths.The last few years all record attempts
have been one direction and the record average must be in the same measured
mile..
When conditions allow for two way runs, again the length of the course rules
the distance and where the record average is taken. This is a two way
average and was the way it was done in the early days and longer distances
were not required. A vehicle getting it's fast time in the 5th mile (3rd
measured mile) must obtain the return speed in the 3rd measured mile (this
is the 1st mile on the down run). The return run starts at the 7th mile to
give the vehicle the same acceration distance for the return run.
Other bits of information. To qualify for the long course you must first
exceed 175 mph on thhe short course at the 2 1/4 mile trap, not the 2 to 3
mile trap.
The terminal speed trap on the long course is for information purposes only
and is not considered for records. All records are averaged over a measured
mile and a measured kilo if the meet provides that option. Usually during
BNI and FIA World records.
BNI and FIa have different rules as to the distance a vehicle may make their
attempt. There is no starting line requirement like speed week. As much room
as needed is given, again what the salt conditions allow. However the timing
is for one mile and one kilo within that mile.There are no other timing
devices on the course for this meet. If a joint meet is included then the
additional timing is provided on a seperate course.
