Close on the heels of the information on that RV world record may I suggest
another of interest - going backwards or reverse driving....
A briton - Darren Manning - set acieved a speed of 102.52 mph for driving
backwards. The main rule is that you cannot look over your shoulder - you
have to use the rear view (or driving) mirror.
The attempt was made on a 1.25 mile tarmac runway using gps timing. The
car was a Caterham 7 (the latest version of the Lotus 7 two seat front
engined road sports car). It used the Honda Fireblade engine and by using
the bike transmission system it had a six speed 'reverse' gear gearbox. On
film it looked to be a 'knife edge' job to control as any movement of the
steering wheel looked set to spin the car around. Do not know the Castor
settings..
Speed was 'ratified' by the Guiness Book of Records - hence the World
Claim.
Whose next up for a bit of lunacy at say Maxton or Bonneville?
Malcolm Pittwood, Derby, England.
