TV, or what ever, is not a bad thing. I've know about the goings on at
Bonneville for many decades - but only because I had access to some kind of
media. Unless you knew someone that did the Bonneville or lakes thing, or see
it on some kind of media, you'd never know anything was going on out there.
I've already made my feelings known about added coverage of the LSR world with
my ill fated attempt to get Louise to start a magazine. And with all this
back a forth on additional races, media coverage and the potential for
subverting the sport, I feel just as strongly now that coverage is going to
help rather than hurt the sport. Not too long ago, there was a flurry of
excitement and letting everyone know that Speed Vision was broadcasting a two
parter on the Bonneville event. Lots of positive comments on this. The
wonderful coverage of Jack Costella in the most recent Rodder's Journal was
received with open arms. (It's worth the 12 bucks just to gaze at the two
page photo of Jack at sunset on Bonneville - a classic for sure).
In my mind, Bonneville had always been a place of the speed Gods and not a
place where I could go and play. Well, with retirement and more time to get
into trouble, I rediscovered Bonneville and the LSR world first in Dean
Batchelor's book "The American Hot Rod", and then Louise's book on Bonneville.
And then finding you all on this web thing brought me to this point where --
gee - maybe I can do this also. And the warm welcome you give to us
newcommers! Shame on you -- now I'm building my own LSR car - the square
tubed Lakester that you all gave me advise on. I have infected a close
gearhead friend of mine, and now he is building a LSR Triumph GT-6 coupe that
was languishing in his back yard. We have purpose in life now. Well, at
least one more.
Would I want to see more race dates? I don't know at this point. Going to
the lakes or Bonneville is a major thing time wise (even if your retired) so
maybe one or two days tacked on one of the current race dates would handle
more folks that want to run. Maybe you have a test and tune day, or a day for
newcommers to try their wings. That way, you don't have to go through the
setting up and managing a new race -- all the right folks would already be
there to run the event. An East West event? Might be fun to get everyone
together in one place (if they can add another race to there schedules), but
it seems that these runs are such a personal thing that I'm not sure a
"competition" of this kind make sense. Maybe a start would be an East West
meeting in the middle of the country once ever year or two would just to get
folks together would be a good start. Bring your boots tho as its bound to
get pretty deep. I like the idea of recycling an old airfield that the govt.
has given up. I don't think that a few more Maxtons would be a bad thing.
