About 5 years ago I had an Aeronautical Engineer in Twain Harte, CA
design a scoop for our Dragmaster Dart nostalgia car. The ET's immediately
went from 8.90 to 8.75 on a July day at Denver with no other changes.The guy
was a WWII Navy fighter pilot who graduated from college after the war with a
degree in Aeronautical Engineering, worked many years for either Douglas
and/or Lockheed in the LA area, then retired to the Sierra foothills where he
is active in racecar aeronautics including designing wings.
When we built the modified roadster in 97-99 we incorporated the same
scoop but never ran the car without it for comparison.
When we designed the roadster this guy was in on it from the start,
calling the shots on the streamlining that was allowed by SCTA and eventually
designing the blower scoop.
We have no "on-board" computer on the roadster, but there is a
"tattle-tale" readout on the blower gauge and the thing records far more
pressure than we calculate should be generated by the little 4:71 at 12%
overdrive.
Years ago I had Harry Hoffman Jr. design and build an injector scoop for
my old GoldDigger lakester. At that time I had a Performance Measuring
Systems (Don Barr) computer on the car. One of the readouts was differential
pressure between the inside of the scoop and ambient outside pressure. At the
time we estimated that the scoop was getting us about 1000' of density
altitude back from what the altitude and temperature cost us.
