John,

I went to my local fire extinguisher dealer (who is also an important
sponsor) and asked for a 12V sensor to put in the engine compartment. He
provided a 4" long closed tube looking device, threaded on one end, with
two sets of wires on it. It is used in buildings and is a switch that turns
on at about 400 degrees F. It has 2 circuits in it so if one fails, the
other one can be used. A simple 12V (always hot) circuit through a red
trailer clearance light placed in the lower part of the cockpit (where it
is dark) completes the system. It is testable with a hair dryer. I placed
the sensor behind the battery (for normal heat shielding) in the
transmission area (back of the rear engine). I figured that if a fire was
going, it would get to the sensor quick enough but I wanted some security
against false alarms. I didn't want to put a rear view mirror on the car
but I guess that I could...... also figured that if the front engine was on
fire, the driver would know fairly soon.
All this came about as a result of discussions with Cec MCCrea on the
Vesco-Nish liner and how they did their fire alarm system. They use a boat
system as I recall. You might also check with a boat dealer?
